hot competition

Song Of The Year

  • Poker Face- Lady Gaga
  • Pretty Wings-Maxwell
  • Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)- Beyoncé
  • Use Somebody- Kings Of Leon
  • You Belong With Me- Taylor Swift
on sunday, the 52nd grammy awards air on CBS. the hottest competition is definitely for song of the year. some of the most listened to artists of 2009 are nominated. but the competition is so stiff, that it's hard for me to determine who'll win. 2009 definitely resulted in breakout artists and a rebirth of music. lady gaga came out of the dance scene and turned into an evolutionary dance beast. beyonce stopped being so "crazy in love" and decided it was time to release her inner beast sasha fierce. and kings of leon stopped being an indie artists and became arena-filling rock stars. and let's not begin with taylor swift. i don't like country music, and i don't have time to even comment on her.

it's hard for me to pick my favorite. know that my choice is based on my music preference. i don't like country music, therefore i don't listen to taylore swift. as far as i'm concerned, she's no competition for lady gaga, beyonce, or kings of leon. and maxwell just came back last year and pretty wings wasn't that much of a major track. sure it came on the hip-hop and R&B radio stations, but that was it. beyonce, lady gaga, and kings of leon were all over TV: MTV, MTV2, VH1, Fuse. . . you name it, they were there.

now let's discuss kings of leon. i've loved these guys for years. before only by the night became a hit CD. they've been major on the indie scene for a while now. but now they're finally getting the recognition they deserve. i'm just worried that not ENOUGH people know about them. lady gaga and beyonce are ridiculously well-known and been in the limelight for a greater part of 2009. for me, kings of leon are major artists who are being overshadowed by beyonce and lady gaga. sure there's a possibility they might win and if they do, i'll defintely gasp and clap for them.

vs.

isn't this expected? sure it's an epic battle but did the grammy nominating people/committee/who-ever-it's-called really think they were doing something interesting and spectacular by nominating the two hottest women in the game? everybody know that 2009 was their year. beyonce turned it out with single ladies, halo, ego, diva, sweet dreams. . . do i really need to keep going? lady gaga gave us just dance, poker face, love game, paparazzi, and bad romance. sure lady gaga's reportoire is shorter but let's glance at the impact she's had.

SHE FUCKING MET QUEEN ELIZABETH! that's major.

truthfully, i love both songs. i tried to hate on lady gaga but that didn't last long. but single ladies puts beyonce over the top. beyonce/sasha fierce released a simple dance video in black and white. it turned into a phenomeon on youtube with our 3 millions views. if you think about it, the video for single ladies could've been overdone in so many ways. that's the difference between poker face and single ladies: simple good music. poker face is more complex and a little overtly autotuned. beyonce took it back to basics which is the reason why she'll win.

ingenuity and evolution

as much as i like to talk shit about kanye west's attitude, there's no way i can deny my love for his music. it's easy for me to make a list of all his ridiculous quotes about his greatness but can we seriously deny it? this is a dude who almost died in a serious car accident and has given us the greatness of the college dropout and graduation. but it's possible that kanye's escapades are finally catching up to him. has karma finally bit him in the ass? on the for reals, where is he right now? after that crazy taylor swift moment, the only thing we've gotten from him is that off the wall "we were once a fairytale" short film (directed by the great spike jonze). no fresh tracks, no news of his clothing line pastelle.

but his questionable girlfriend amber rose has been seen by the paparazzo where some short ass dresses. please cover that up honey, leave it for kanye's eyes ONLY.

now, i've been trying to hate on lady gaga for the longest time. it's not the kind of hate where i just think everything about her sucks. i'm just ashamed to declare to the world that i blast her shit behind closed doors. i'm just gonna say it. "just dance" is hot and it shouldn't be denied. but don't forget that her lyrical content is questionable. i mean 'wish i could shut my playboy mouth. . ' what the hell does that even mean? but it's the actually background that's infectious. i can listen to the instrumentals of "love game," "just dance," and "paparazzi."
i just wish she could calm down her look a little.
she started off cute. different, architectural, and interesting.

and now i'm just confused. like how does something like this even cross your mind?

extra-potent haterade in hip-hop

through some recent conversations with a good friend, i discovered that he think that lil wayne sucks. not aiight, or average, but SUCKS. i was a little shocked and went into serious defensive mode. it's easy to name at the minimum 4 reasons why lil wayne is the shit and here it goes:

  1. he can jump on any track and make it hot
let's jump back to 2007. remember "duffle bag boy" by playaz circle? there's no denying that this track was hot. but let's be truthful, if weezy wasn't on this track would you have cared? i wouldn't have. sure i loved the beat but hearing weezy's voice on the chorus is what makes this track hot. come on now, did anybody even know that playaz circle was 2 dudes? i sure as hell didn't.

 2. remember this interview?
i sure as hell do because it was one of the realist things i've ever watched. nobody can deny that lil wayne keeps it real. he straight up told katie couric about his love for syrup and kept the interview rolling. and because of this interview, we know that weezy doesn't view himself as a role model. he's out there doing music because it's what he loves and feels. the only people he cares about is his family and kids and that's not something a lot of people out there can say for themselves.

3. crazy concerts; believe the hype
i went to the young money tour in va beach in august. there's no denying that weezy can get a crowd hype. he runs around the stage like a kid with a major case of ADHD. but that's what keeps you excited. he keeps moving because he's psyched to be on stage and you get psyched to see him. everybody EVERYBODY knows his tracks and when you sing with him, you can tell that lil wayne is lovin the spotlight.

4. business man to the fullest
lil wayne is an entrepreneur. don't try to deny it. me and blog buddy ayanna have realized this in two ways:  he OWNS everybody on young money and everybody on young money mentions his name. if you been checking ot female rappers lately (don't feel bad if you haven't, nobody has), then you know about nicki minaj. listen to her mixtape beam me up scotty. it's actually good shit. she adds some freshness to the game. but i can't stop there. i have to mention her annoying voice and the fact that she references lil wayne and young money on almost every track. and look at the young money roster. it's hot, but these are weezy's bitches. he's probably making a killing off everything they do. drake drops some vocals on a track, weezy gets a percentage. nicki minaj makes an appearance in mariah carey's new video, weezy gets a piece. that' s a true mogul in the making right there.
